A Mississippi Department of Transportation worker went above the call of duty Monday when he helped a woman deliver a baby on the side of Interstate 20 in Brandon.

MDOT Superintendent Wayne Evans said he was preparing to close a lane of traffic when a vehicle approached with emergency flashers on. The vehicle stopped and two woman jumped out of the car.

“They were in desperate need for something,” he said.

Evans learned a passenger was about to give birth in the backseat.

That’s when he jumped into action and grabbed a first-aid kit from his truck.

“It was gonna happen pretty quick and I knew they weren’t going to make it to the hospital.”

Evans said he was trained in the U.S. Marine Corps to be calm in the face of crises, but said the Marines “never trained to do anything like that!”

The mother and baby were reportedly doing well after they left the side of the road and sought proper medical care.
