The Louisiana Department of Health reported Tuesday morning that 171 people in Louisiana have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus. That’s an increase of 35 people since early Monday evening.

In addition the state reported one additional death related to coronavirus illness, with a total of 4 deaths.

The sharp increase — approximately 26% overnight — came as the state was working to quickly shut down businesses where groups of people might congregate, closing restaurants, bars and casinos.

Across the nation federal and state officials are working to stop people from moving around and meeting in groups in hopes of “flattening the curve” of coronavirus cases. Health experts fear that if spread of the virus is not slowed the nation’s hospitals could be swamped with patients and run out of resources to treat patients.

Everyone is warned to take the necessary precautions to help limit the spread of COVID-19 and stay safe and healthy.

These precautions include:

  • Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds and frequently
  • Covering your cough or sneeze with your arm
  • Avoiding touching your face
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
  • Avoiding close contact with others
  • And staying home if you are sick
