Mississippi income taxpayers got a little extension on filing their 2019 state income tax filings Monday afternoon.

Mississippi’s Department of Revenue announced that due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the state’s filing deadline will moved one month from April 15 to May 15.

This change applies to both business and personal income taxes, but does not apply to sales tax, use tax or other types of tax payments, only income tax.

The state acknowledged the extension does not coincide with the recent IRS extension which allows federal income taxpayers to file as late as July 15 due to the coronavirus crisis.

“We cannot extend the deadlines beyond the fiscal year end of June 30,” a DOR spokesman wrote in a written release. “To do so would jeopardize the ability of our state leadership to balance the fiscal year budget.
