Coronavirus: Mississippi cases up 28 percent, 5,000 positive cases across South

Mississippi reported a 28-percent increase Tuesday morning in COVID-19 coronavirus cases since the previous day, state health officials report.

The Mississippi State Department of Health says 320 people in the state have tested positive for the coronavirus. One person has died.

The number of positive cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus continue to rise across the South as well.

Here’s a breakdown, by state, from Tuesday morning:

Alabama: 196 positive cases, 0 deaths.
Arkansas: 206 positive cases, 0 deaths.
Florida: 1,330 positive cases, 18 deaths.
Georgia: 800 positive cases, 26 deaths.
Louisiana: 1,172 positive cases, 34 deaths.
Mississippi: 320 positive cases, 1 death.
Tennessee: 615 positives cases, 2 deaths.
Texas: 410 positive cases, 9 deaths.

Total cases across the South: 5,049

The number of people infected worldwide surpassed the 392,000 mark. Deaths were more than 17,000, but the number of people considered recovered reached more than 102,000, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.

The University’s tracking shows approximately 46,481 cases in the U.S., making the U.S. the country with the third highest number of cases behind China and Italy, which reported 81,588 and 63,927, respectively.

Everyone is warned to take the necessary precautions to help limit the spread of COVID-19 and stay safe and healthy.

These precautions include:

  • Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds and frequently
  • Covering your cough or sneeze with your arm
  • Avoiding touching your face
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
  • Avoiding close contact with others
  • And staying home if you are sick
