An inmate at a Mississippi jail is pregnant after she had a “quickie” with another inmate, authorities said.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said the pregnancy was confirmed by a nurse practitioner, The Natchez Democrat reported.
Patten said trusted female inmates at the Adams County Jail were allowed to leave their cells to perform cleaning duties under supervision.
The female inmate told investigators she was cleaning the stairwell, saw a male inmate in the laundry room and had sex with him, which she described as a “quickie,” Patten said.
The female inmate said the sex was consensual and no guards were involved, Patten said.
The woman has been at the jail for a little more than a year on felony charges and has only been released from her cell twice, Patten said.
He also said the woman had requested several pregnancy tests since she’s been at the jail.
Patten said while the pregnancy is under investigation, female inmates won’t be able to leave their cells to clean.
The woman is still being housed at the jail while a nurse oversees her medical care, Patten said. The woman’s name was not released.
“It’s very unfortunate that this happened. It will never cease to amaze me what a criminal will do to get out of jail,” Patten said. “Conceiving a child is not the way.”
