The lone fatal victim of Sunday evening’s tornado that ripped through several Mississippi counties has been identified.
Authorities say Jerry Johnson, 72, of the Sandy Hook community in Marion County was at home alone when the tornado struck.
Johnson’s own son, Roger Johnson, found his father’s body in the rubble.
Preliminary assessments show the tornado was an EF4 rating, the second most powerful rating given. Experts say the storm had sustained winds as high as 170 mph and was 1.25 miles wide at its largest point.
The storm cut a path more than 54 miles long across five counties.
The storms damaged or destroyed dozens of houses along its path.
The National Weather Service’s Jackson office says a slight chance for another round of severe weather exists Wednesday evening into Thursday morning for central Mississippi.
