Mississippi’s COVID-19 coronavirus cases set a new daily record with data reported Friday by the Mississippi State Health Department. The number of deaths also hit a new daily record, but the number included deaths that occurred weeks ago, but were previously under investigation.

State health officials reported 397 new cases. It was the 23rd day in a row the number of new cases rose by more than 100 cases per day.

The state reported 20 more people died in the state due to the virus, bringing the state’s total number of deaths to 281. That set a daily death record, but included 11 deaths that occurred between March 29 and April 16, but were previously unreported.

The state reported that 110 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or 39 percent of all deaths in the state.

The number of patients hospitalized with the virus also set a new daily record with 454. It was fourth consecutive day in a row that hospitalization number set daily records.

Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the number of deaths of residents of long-term care facilities was “probably an increasing concern.”

“That’s where the virus can spread easily if the conditions are right for that to happen and we also know that’s a vulnerable population,” Dobbs said Thursday afternoon. “I know people are really anxious to go see their relatives in long-term care and congregant settings but please be patient and know that we’re working diligently to try and protect them as much as possible.”

The state said 160 patients were in ICU beds and 75 required mechanical ventilation.
