Man running from police killed when car leaves Mississippi highway, strikes tree

A man running from law enforcement officers Sunday afternoon was killed when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said Marcus Stokes was killed when his GMC Denali left the roadway on Highway 310 in Crenshaw, Mississippi and struck a tree.

The police chase was begun by local police, troopers said.

The highway patrol reported that Stokes was pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately clear why police started chasing Stokes.
