The official start of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is still more than two weeks away, but forecasters say a low pressure system has a 50-50 shot of becoming developing into a tropical storm this weekend.

The storm system on Tuesday was located a couple of hundred miles north of the Bahamas.

Meteorologists with the National Hurricane Center say the weather system appears to be in conditions that will be conducive for further development by Sunday.

Forecasters gave the system a 50-percent chance of developing over the next five day.

Given its current track it’s unlikely to affect states along the Gulf Coast, but it underscores the need to be on the watch as hurricane season approaches.
