Mississippi coronavirus cases, deaths stats jump after days of decline

After several days of reporting relatively lower numbers of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases, Mississippi reported a spike Thursday in cases and deaths.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 393 new cases have been confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 10,483. The state believes approximately 62 percent of the patients found to have coronavirus have recovered.
The state announced Thursday morning 15 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 480.
The state reported that 224 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 47 percent of all deaths in the state.
The seven-day average of new cases reported increased with Thursday’s spike to 257 cases per day.
