New cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Mississippi continued to climb Sunday and the 14-day trailing average of new cases hit an new, all-time high mark.

A declining 14-day new case average is one of the federal government’s standards for whether or not the virus is being contained. Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases hit 267 with Sunday’s updated statistics.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 173 new cases have been confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 11,296.

The state announced Sunday morning 11 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 521.

The state reported that 251 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 48 percent of all deaths in the state.
