The Latest: Coronavirus cases rise in Mississippi, but trailing average shows cases slowing

New cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Mississippi rose Monday but at a much lower rate than the prior week’s average, causing the 14-day trailing average of new cases begin declining.
The federal government recommends states consider keeping restrictions in place until the state has 14 days of declining new case counts.
Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases dropped to 254 with Monday’s updated statistics.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 136 new cases have been confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 11,432.
The state announced Monday morning 7 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 528.
The state reported that 254 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 48 percent of all deaths in the state.
