The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 263 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 11,967.

The state announced Tuesday morning 16 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 570.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs issued a warning earlier in the week that despite some easing of business restrictions, the virus is still circulating in Mississippi.

“Coronavirus is actively circulating in our communities and everyone is still at risk,” he said. “Most people spreading coronavirus don’t even know they have it. It’s impossible to know for sure if someone you’re around has coronavirus … Social distancing and masks can prevent coronavirus transmission.

“When you are in public, please always wear a mask,” Dobbs said. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases rose to 253 cases per day with Wednesday’s updated statistics. The 7-day average of new cases rose slightly to 268 per day.

The state reported that 281 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 49 percent of all deaths in the state.
