The Latest: Mississippi coronavirus cases, deaths continue to rise

Mississippi reported a steady number of new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus and deaths Thursday, keeping in line with the recent trailing 7- and 14-day averages.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 255 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 12,222.
The state announced Thursday morning 10 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 580.
Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases remained at 253 cases per day with Thursday’s updated statistics. The 7-day average of new cases dropped to 248 per day.
The state reported that 289 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 50 percent of all deaths in the state.
