Mississippi coronavirus cases continue at near-record pace, 28 more deaths reported

Mississippi reported more cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus Tuesday as the 7-day and 14-day averages continued to hover near record highs.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 268 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 16,020.

The state announced Tuesday morning 28 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 767. An overwhelming number, 21, of those deaths came from people listed as residents of long-term care facilities. Of the total deaths reported Tuesday, 10 occurred last month but the reporting of them was delayed.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases increased to 327 per day. The 14-day average of daily new cases also rose Tuesday hitting 308 cases per day. Both averages were just one number below the state’s high, reached on Monday.

The state reported that 395 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 51 percent of all deaths in the state.
