Mississippi reports record high in daily number of new coronavirus cases, nearly 500 in last 24 hours

After several days of a slightly downward trend of new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the Mississippi State Department of Health reported Monday the highest single-day spike in new cases.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 498 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 17,768.
The state announced Monday 20 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 837. State health officials said 9 of the deaths reported Monday actually occurred between May 13 and June 1, but their reporting was delayed.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 288 per day. The record high of the 7-day average of new cases is 328 and was set exactly one week ago on June 1.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Monday to 308 cases per day.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 435 people from long-term care facilities or 52 percent of the total deaths.
