Where were the COVID-19 hot spots in Mississippi last week?

For one Mississippi county, the incidence of new cases of COVID-19 virus cases last week was ten times greater than that of the state.

Wayne County saw an increase of 62 cases of COVID-19 — which equals to 30.5 new cases of the coronavirus for every 10,000 people between June 1 and June 7.

Comparatively, Mississippi as a whole saw an increase of 968 cases in the same period. The increase equals to approximately 3 new cases of COVID-19 per 10,000 Mississippi residents.

According to the Mississippi Department of Health numbers released Monday, 13 other counties experienced a incidence of new cases last week that was double or greater than that of the state.

Those counties are:

  • Grenada County — 24 new cases — 11.4 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Copiah County — 31 new cases — 10.9 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Jones County — 73 new cases — 10.7 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Greene County — 14 new cases — 10.3 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Holmes County — 18 new cases — 10.2 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Claiborne County — 9 new cases — 10 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Noxubee County — 8 new cases — 7.6 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Humphreys County — 6 new cases — 7.3 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Yalobusha County — 9 new cases — 7.3 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Walthall County — 10 new cases — 6.9 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Jasper County — 11 new cases — 6.7 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Neshoba County — 18 new cases — 6.2 new cases per 10,000 people
  • Choctaw County — 5 new cases — 6.0 new cases per 10,000 people

Hinds County reported the highest increase in Mississippi COVID-19 cases last week with 88 new confirmed cases reported between June 1 and June 7.

The 10 Mississippi counties with the highest number of new cases between June 1 and June 7 are:

  • Hinds County — 88 cases
  • Jones County — 73 cases
  • Wayne County — 62 cases
  • Desoto County — 56 cases
  • Madison County — 47 cases
  • Copiah County — 31 cases
  • Forrest County — 26 cases
  • Lee County — 25 cases
  • Grenada County — 24 cases
  • Lowndes County — 24 cases

Four counties had zero additional cases of COVID-19 last week. They are Franklin, Quitman, Sharkey and Wilkinson Counties.
