Whether the demand is from restaurants and bars beginning to reopen or just people needing an escape from the new normal of living in the coronavirus pandemic, Mississippians are apparently buying lots of booze.

The Mississippi Alcohol Beverage Control agency reported extremely high levels of sales yesterday.

“The ABC is experiencing record numbers of orders at levels we have not previously seen,” the agency reported in a social media post. “Since March 16th, we have shipped 932,120 cases which represents an increase of 140,785 cases over last year.”

ABC officials reported that while orders are backlogged, the agency’s workers are working at full capacity.

“We are shipping at capacity every night,” the agency reported. “We will be working the next two Fridays to attempt to reduce the backlog.”

Still, for commercial customers, the ABC warns to expect delays.

“It will take longer than usual to receive your order. We ask for your patience as we work to get your orders out.”
