New coronavirus cases in Mississippi set another new 14-day daily record

Mississippi reported another higher-than-average number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Wednesday as the Mississippi State Department of Health released its latest statistics, and the 14-day daily average case count hit another record.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 374 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 18,483. The state estimates more than 13,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state announced Wednesday 21 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 868. State health officials said 4 of the deaths reported Wednesday actually occurred between May 26 and June 1, but their reporting was delayed.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 309 per day. The record high of the 7-day average of new cases is 328 and was set on June 1.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Wednesday to 317 cases per day, a new record. The previous 14-day average was set Tuesday when the mark reached 313.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 447 people from long-term care facilities or 52 percent of the total deaths.
