Mississippi reported a spike Wednesday in new COVID-19 coronavirus cases and deaths over the last 24 hours, driving the trailing 7- and 14-day averages higher again.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 489 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 20,641. The state estimates more than 15,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state announced Wednesday 23 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 938. The state reported that 16 of the deaths reported Wednesday actually occurred between May 23 and June 11, but were late due to reporting delays.
Of the total deaths, the state reports 477 or 51% of the total were patients at long-term care facilities.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 308 per day. The record high of the 7-day average of new cases is 332 and was set on June 12.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Wednesday to 309 cases per day. The 14-day, daily average record was 317 set on June 10.
Both averages had been down over the last several days, but jumped back up with the high number of cases reported Wednesday.
