The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Sunday night that it was still incapable of reporting full state numbers of positive COVID-19 coronavirus cases due to software problems, but said the number of patients in hospitals had dropped Saturday after a spike on Friday.

The state reported 483 patients confirmed to have COVID-19 coronavirus were receiving care in Mississippi’s hospitals as of Saturday. Earlier Sunday, the state reported 516 COVID-19 patients required hospitalization on Friday.

Another 179 patients were hospitalized Saturday with suspected COVID-19, but had not been confirmed by testing.

The state has not reported a daily number of new coronavirus cases since Thursday when 381 new cases were reported.

Those cases brought the total number of cases discovered in the state to be 21,022, with 943 deaths attributed to the virus. The majority of cases recover, but some patients, particularly the elderly and people with underlying conditions, can become extremely ill.

“Our daily reporting of new cases has been interrupted as we work to resolve problems in our legacy software. We appreciate the importance of detailed data reporting, and hope to rectify this situation as quickly as possible and resume timely, accurate and detailed reports,” MSDH officials said late Sunday in a written statement on social media.
