Two teens charged in murder of Mississippi National Guard seargent

Two teens were arrested Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of a sergeant in the Mississippi National Guard.

XaJavier King, 19, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault for the shooting that killed Sgt. Stephen Matory at an apartment complex in Jackson on Thursday morning, the city’s police department said in a Twitter post. Chaela Edwards, 18, was also charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

Jackson police said last week that Matory, 24, was a bystander when he was fatally shot at Summer Park Apartments.

The Mississippi National Guard said in a statement they were “devastated” by his death.

“This young soldier was a rising star in our ranks. He was a soldier’s soldier,” Lt. Col. Deidre D. Smith told The Clarion Ledger.
