The City of Laurel joined a growing list of Mississippi municipalities to order the Mississippi state flag removed from its public facilities.

Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee signed the order Tuesday to remove the flag.

Magee told local media that Mississippi flags being flown in the city will be donated to either the local library or another entity to preserve for posterity sake.

Laurel joins the City of Gulfport and Tunica County as the latest local governments to remove the state flag which contains a Confederate emblem.
