Mississippi reported a single-day record Tuesday for new COVID-19 coronavirus cases, nearly 90 percent above the trailing 14-day average.
The sharp daily increase, caused the 7-day and 14-day average number of daily new cases to also hit new highs.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 611 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 22,898. The state estimates more than 17,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state announced Tuesday 11 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 989.
The high case number on Tuesday caused Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases to rise to 392 per day, a new record high.
The current 7-day daily new case average is more than double the new case averages from mid-April, when the average number of new cases per day was less than 200.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Tuesday to 342 cases per day, a new record high.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 494 people from long-term care facilities or 50 percent of the total deaths.
