Mississippi reported another higher-than-average number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Wednesday as the trailing 7- and 14-day averages moved higher marking new highs.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 526 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 23,424. The state estimates more than 17,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state announced Wednesday 22 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,011. Of the deaths reported Wednesday, 12 actually occurred between May 30 and June 14, but were delayed in reporting, the state said.
The high case number on Wednesday caused Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases to rise to 398 per day, a new record high.
The current 7-day daily new case average is more than double the new case averages from mid-April, when the average number of new cases per day was less than 200.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Wednesday to 353 cases per day, a new record high.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 501 people from long-term care facilities or 49.5 percent of the total deaths.
