The Latest: Mississippi marks record spike in new coronavirus cases

Mississippi reported a large spike in COVID-19 coronavirus cases Thursday – more than double the trailing daily average, with more than 1,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 1,092 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 24,512. The state estimates more than 17,000 of those cases have fully recovered.

The state announced Thursday 5 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,016.

The high case numbers reported Thursday sent the 7- and 14-day, daily new case averages to new highs.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases to rise to 499 per day, a new record high, and more than 100 cases higher than the record set the prior day.

The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Thursday to 431 cases per day, also a new record high.

Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 503 people from long-term care facilities or 49.5 percent of the total deaths.

The number of people with COVID-19 or suspected of having COVID-19 is also rising. Thursday the state reported that 536 confirmed cases were in hospital beds with another 219 suspected, but not yet confirmed with a positive test, also in the hospital. That’s the highest number of hospitalized patients on record since the start of the pandemic in March.
