Mississippi health officials are urging state residents to take precautions to stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, and they are aiming their message squarely at young adults who aren’t following logical guidelines.

Whether through arrogance, apathy or the “it won’t happen to me” attitude, Mississippi’s young people are not socially distancing and not taking common-sense safeguards to prevent the spread of the virus and that has state health officials worried.

“COVID-19 cases are rising fastest among young adults who are failing to take proper safeguards,” Mississippi State Department of Health officials wrote in a social media post on Thursday afternoon. “With a record number of new cases in Mississippi, prevention at this time is critical.”

Mississippi’s State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said he urges all Mississippians aged 2 and older to wear face masks in public place and keep socially distance from others whenever possible.

“Acting together, we can make a difference,” the health department wrote.
