A Mississippi mayor took to social media last week to quell rumors and attempt to get people to stop doubting health care professionals as the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to rage across the state.

“Please listen to our health care professionals regarding covid-19,” Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton wrote. “My job as mayor is do to my best to keep our community safe, not make easy or politically popular decisions. As we have said from the beginning, we will follow the advice of our health care professionals and we will continue to do so.”

Shelton signed an executive order Friday requiring people inside the city limits of his city to wear a face mask when inside a public building or business.

The order goes into effect Monday morning and is similar to one in effect in the nearby city of Oxford.

Shelton also used his social media reach to dispel other myths that perpetuate in the city. His comments were made in a long, run-on sentence.

“Also, ANTIFA is not coming to Tupelo, Elvis statues are not being removed, you are not the target of some type of global conspiracy, it is impossible to erase history and no one has attempted to do so, covid (sic) is not a hoax, you shouldn’t believe and share posts that are obviously false or used as political propaganda, and there is nothing ‘liberal’ about any of the actions that have been taken by our administration regarding these matters.”
