Mississippi’s coronavirus curve continues to spike, not flatten: Here are the latest stats

Mississippi reported higher than average new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Monday — the second-highest daily number on record — as the trailing 7- and 14-day averages of new cases climbed to new record highs again for the seventh-straight day.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 675 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 26,567. The state estimates more than 19,000 of those cases have fully recovered.

Last Thursday, the state reported a single-day record for new cases with 1,092 cases. Monday’s new case count was the second-highest, single-day case report since the pandemic began in March.

The state announced on Monday 20 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,059. Of the deaths reported on Monday, the state reported 18 of them occurred between May 5 and June 22, but were being reported late.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 611 per day, a new record high. The 7-day average is more than double was it was just two weeks prior.

The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Monday to 483 cases per day, also a new record high.

Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 516 people from long-term care facilities or 48.7 percent of the total deaths.

On Monday the state reported the number of patients hospitalized that either had confirmed COVID-19 or were suspected of having the virus, but hadn’t been confirmed by a test rose as well. In total 719 people were in Mississippi hospitals, but was down from 676 the day prior.
