Mississippi sets new coronavirus records – average new cases, hospitalizations keep climbing

Mississippi’s new COVID-19 coronavirus cases continued to churn higher Tuesday as the state reported the second-highest daily number on record.

The trailing 7- and 14-day averages of new cases climbed to new record highs again for the eighth-straight day.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 680 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 27,247. The state estimates more than 19,000 of those cases have fully recovered.

Last Thursday, the state reported a single-day record for new cases with 1,092 cases. Tuesday’s new case count was the second-highest, single-day case report since the pandemic began in March, breaking the previous second-highest case count reported Monday.

The state announced on Tuesday 14 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,073.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 621 per day, a new record high. The 7-day average is more than double was it less than two weeks prior.

The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Tuesday to 507 cases per day, also a new record high.

Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 523 people from long-term care facilities or 48.7 percent of the total deaths.

On Tuesday the state reported a new record for the number of patients hospitalized that either had confirmed COVID-19 or were suspected of having the virus, but hadn’t been confirmed by a test rose as well.

In total 779 people were in Mississippi hospitals yesterday, the state reported. The previous record was set June 25.
