Mississippi’s 14-day average of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases continued to rise Thursday, setting another record, but perhaps more troubling was the sharp spike in hospitalization numbers.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Thursday an additional 870 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 28,770. The state estimates more than 19,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
But state statistics also showed a sharp rise in patients hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases. More than 75 new patients were hospitalized, in the last 24 hours, the state reported.
In total 863 people were in Mississippi hospitals yesterday, the state reported. The previous record was set the day prior.
The state also reported 10 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,092.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases dropped to 608 per day as the state’s highest single-day total is now 8 days in the past. Despite declining slightly, the 7-day average remains more than double was it less than two weeks prior.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Thursday to 553 cases per day, a new record high.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 529 people from long-term care facilities or 48.4 percent of the total deaths.
