Mississippi coronavirus climb takes holiday break as new cases hit two-week low

Published 12:15 pm Sunday, July 5, 2020

The rapid rise in reported new COVID-19 coronavirus cases took a pause Sunday, perhaps tied to delayed reporting over the Fourth of July holiday, as the state reported the lowest number of new cases since mid-June.

The Mississippi State Health Department reported an additional 226 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 30,900. The state estimates more than 19,000 of those cases have fully recovered.

The state did not publicly release the latest number of hospitalizations from COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 on Sunday, but on Saturday the number was at an all-time high.
