Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said Monday that the state is “willing and able” to take action if coronavirus cases continue to consume the state’s hospital system.

“If the numbers continue to increase, if hospitalizations continue to increase. if the number of ICU patients continue to increase, we will have to be willing and able to take action to decompress our hospital system,” Reeves said. “A reminder, we never believed that we could stop the spread of the virus.

His comments came in a Facebook Live video as he reported earlier that he’s self-isolating himself after coming into contact with lawmakers who have tested positive for COVID-19.

“We’ve always wanted to be able to slow the spread of the virus so we could protect our healthcare system,” he said.

“Remember, our goal is to ensure every single Mississippian that can get better with quality care, receives that quality care.”

“Part of the goal in doing that is making sure that our hospital system is decompressed in such a way where there are beds available for those COVID-19 patients that need them,” he said.

“Please consider doing your part. Please consider wearing a mask when you are in public,” Reeves said. “The virus is not a hoax.”
