The recent spike in reported new COVID-19 coronavirus cases remained much lower Monday for the second-straight day. The lowered amounts could be tied to delayed reporting over the Fourth of July holiday or it could means a slowing of the virus’ spread.
The Mississippi State Health Department reported an additional 357 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 31,257. The state estimates more than 22,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state did not immediately release the latest number of hospitalizations from COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 on Monday, but on Saturday the number was at an all-time high.
The state also reported Monday 3 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,114.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases dropped to 670 per day, after setting a record at 735 of Saturday.
The 7-day average remains more than double was it less than two weeks prior.
The 14-day average of daily new cases rose slightly Monday to 641 cases per day and remains near the record high set on Saturday at 645.
Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 542 people from long-term care facilities or 48.7 percent of the total deaths.
