A Mississippi man accused of assaulting his girlfriend and holding her and two of her children captive has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Brandon Christopher Dawson, 22, was charged Tuesday with one count of aggravated domestic violence and three counts of kidnapping, news outlets reported.

Deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a Gulport home Tuesday afternoon where they found Dawson was holding the woman and her children inside and refusing to let them leave, Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson said in a statement. Deputies negotiated with Dawson for several hours before he released them and surrendered to authorities, according to officials.
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment, news outlets said. Authorities did not detail her injuries. The two children were not hurt.

Dawson was being held in jail on a $500,000. It was unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
