Coronavirus cases hit new highs, more than 5,000 cases, 138 deaths reported in week

Mississippi’s coronavirus case counts continued to worsen Sunday as new cases were well above the trailing average and the state set new records for the 7- and 14-day daily averages.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Sunday an additional 868 new COVID-19 coronavirus cases confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 36,287.
The state estimates more than 22,000 of those cases have fully recovered.
The state also reported 19 new deaths Sunday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,249. Eight of the deaths reported Sunday actually occurred between June 12 and July 6, but were delayed in reporting.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases jumped to 769 and the 14-day average of daily new cases rose to 742, of which were all-time highs.
In the last 14 days 210 deaths have been attributed to the virus. That’s the highest 14-day total of deaths since June 4.
The state did not provide detailed information on hospitalization rates but said the additional reporting would resume on Monday.
Totals of all reported cases since March 11, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
