Mississippi hospitals hit another record high of COVID-19 coronavirus cases

The number of Mississippians hospitalized with the COVID-19 coronavirus soared to a new record as the state released the latest statistics Tuesday morning.
Mississippi State Health Department stats show that through Monday 1,059 people were in Mississippi hospitalized with either confirmed COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 awaiting test results. The previous record was set the day prior.
Of those patients, 227 were in ICU rooms and 126 required ventilators.
On Monday, Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said four hospitals in the Jackson area had no ICU beds available. Statewide, he said, eight hospitals had no ICU beds available.
Mississippi reported 862 new cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 37,542. The state believes nearly 26,000 of those cases have recovered.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases dropped slightly to 761. The 14-day average of daily new cases rose to 735.
The state also reported 23 new deaths Tuesday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,272.
Totals of all reported cases since March 11, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
