Mississippi set more records Thursday with the highest number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases reported in a single day and the number of patients requiring hospitalization at an all-time high as well.
Mississippi State Health Department reported that 1,117 people were in Mississippi hospitals with either confirmed COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 awaiting test results. It was a new all-time high for total COVID patients in hospitals. The previous record was set the day prior, that record set the day before, marking an alarming trend, health experts say.
Of those patients, 247 were in ICU rooms and 125 required ventilators, also record highs.
Mississippi reported 1,230 new cases Thursday, the highest single-day number of cases reported since the pandemic began.
That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 39,797. The state believes nearly 26,000 of those cases have recovered.
Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases jumped to 886 cases per day. The 14-day average of daily new cases rose to 787. Both stats were record highs.
The state also reported 18 new deaths Thursday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,308.
