A Mississippi State Representative is in the ICU after becoming infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus as the virus spread to dozens of lawmakers and capitol staff.

Rep. Manly Barton is in ICU, one of his lawmaker colleagues reported Thursday. Barton lives in Moss Point and is a member of the Republican Party and represents Mississippi’s 109th congressional district in George and Jackson counties.

State Rep. Becky Currie shared Barton’s condition in a Facebook post in which she asked for the public’s prayers.

“My friend and fellow Legislator Manly Barton is in ICU with COVID,” Currie wrote in the public post. “Please help me pray for him. He is the kindest man and I enjoy working with him so much.”

Earlier this week Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the legislative outbreak had spread to 41 total cases. That number including lawmakers and staffers, including House Speaker Philip Gunn and Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann.
