Two-week death toll hits new record in Mississippi’s coronavirus fight

The last 14 days marked the deadliest two-week period for reported COVID-19 coronavirus deaths since the pandemic began in March.

Mississippi State Health Department statistics reported over the last 14 days recorded 230 deaths as a result of the coronavirus. The previous record of 219 deaths over a two-week period was set in mid-May.

Mississippi reported 1,032 new cases Friday, the third-highest single-day number of cases recorded. The record was set Thursday.

That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 40,829. The state believes nearly 26,000 of those cases have recovered.

Mississippi State Health Department reported a slight drop in the hospitalization numbers with a total of 1,076 people in Mississippi hospitals with either confirmed COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 awaiting test results. The record high was reported on Thursday.

Of those patients, 253 were in ICU rooms, a new record, and 129 required ventilators.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases was steady at 886 cases per day, tied with yesterday’s record high. The 14-day average of daily new cases rose to 796, a new record high.

The state also reported 24 new deaths Friday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,332. Seven of the deaths reported Friday actually occurred between May 11 and July 7, the state reported.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
