Mississippi just shattered new coronavirus daily record as hospitals bulge with COVID-19 patients

Mississippi’s coronavirus case averages soared to record heights again on Tuesday as a new daily record of new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the state’s health department reported.

Mississippi reported 1,635 new cases Tuesday. That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 45,524. The state believes more than 30,000 of those cases have recovered.

“It’s real and getting worse,” Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs wrote on social media Monday night. “And please remember 1 person = 1 case. 1 person tested 1000 times = 1 case. Please ignore the conspiracy nonsense.”

In the last week, Mississippi has recorded 7,982 new cases. By comparison in the entire month of May 8,655 cases were found.

The state also reported 31 new deaths Tuesday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,358. Five of the deaths reported Tuesday actually occurred between June 30 and July 12.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases jumped to 1,140 cases per day after Tuesday’s daily count. The new trailing 7-day average is more than three times what it was a month ago when the average was 330 on June 20.

The 14-day average of daily new cases jumped to 951, also a new record high.

The 14-day death toll dropped slightly to 233 people dying of the virus in the last two weeks.

Mississippi hospitals continue to be stressed by the number of additional COVID-19 patients. On Tuesday morning, the state reported 943 patients were hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 and an additional 211 patients were hospitalized with suspected, but not confirmed by testing, COVID. The state said 293 patients were in ICU beds and 140 were on ventilators.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
