Mississippi’s coronavirus curve looks more like mountain as cases, deaths drive higher

Mississippi’s 7-day coronavirus case average soared to record heights again on Wednesday as more COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the state’s health department reported.

Mississippi reported 1,547 new cases Wednesday. That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 47,071. The state believes more than 30,000 of those cases have recovered.

In the last seven days, Mississippi has recorded 8,504 new cases. By comparison in the entire month of May 8,655 cases were found.

The state also reported 34 new deaths Wednesday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,423. Six of the deaths reported Wednesday actually occurred between June 21 and July 8, but their reporting was delayed.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases jumped to 1,215 cases per day after Wednesday’s daily count. The new trailing 7-day average is more than three times what it was a month ago when the average was 330 on June 20.

The 14-day average of daily new cases jumped to 1,013, also a new record high.

The 14-day death toll rose slightly to 237 people dying of the virus in the last two weeks.

Mississippi hospitals continue to be stressed by the number of additional COVID-19 patients. On Wednesday morning, the state reported 942 patients were hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 and an additional 223 patients were hospitalized with suspected, but not confirmed by testing, COVID. The state said 293 patients were in ICU beds and 138 were on ventilators.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
