Mississippi’s 14-day coronavirus case average hit another record high on Thursday as more COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the state’s health department reported.

Mississippi reported 982 new cases Thursday. That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 48,053. The state believes more than 30,000 of those cases have recovered.

The state also reported 13 new deaths Thursday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,436.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases dropped slightly to 1,179 cases per day after Thursday’s daily count.

The new trailing 7-day average is more than three times what it was a month ago when the average was 330 on June 20.

The 14-day average of daily new cases jumped to 1,033, also a new record high. Over the past 14 days, 14,459 new cases have been reported. By comparison, that’s more cases than were reported in the state for the entire months of April and May combined and more than the entire month of June as well.

The 14-day death toll dropped slightly to 234 people dying of the virus in the last two weeks.

Mississippi hospital utilization continued to climb Thursday with more than 1,200 patients in hospital beds with either confirmed COVID-19 or suspected COVID patients awaiting test results.

The state said 293 people with COVID-19 were in ICU beds.

The state reported that 140 patients were on ventilators.
