Mississippi reported on Friday a near-record high number of COVID-19 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours as more virus records were broken ending the worst two-week week in Mississippi’s fight to date.

Mississippi reported 1,610 new cases Friday, the second-highest, single-day total. That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 49,663. The state believes more than 30,000 of those cases have recovered.

The state also reported 28 new deaths Friday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,463. The state reported that 11 of those deaths actually occurred between July 5 and July 17, but their reporting was delayed.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases jumped to 1,262 cases per day after Friday’s daily count. That figure set another record for the average new cases in a 7-day period.

The new trailing 7-day average is more than three times what it was a month ago when the average was 330 on June 20.

The 14-day average of daily new cases jumped to 1,074, also a new record high. Over the past 14 days, 15,038 new cases have been reported. By comparison, that’s more cases than were reported in the state for the entire months of April and May combined and more than the entire month of June as well.

The 14-day death toll rose to 251 people dying of the virus in the last two week, another new high.

Mississippi hospital utilization climbed to a new high Friday with 975 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospital beds with another 241 suspected COVID patients hospitalized and awaiting test results.

The state said 279 people with COVID-19 were in ICU beds, which was lower than the record highs set over the last few days of 293 ICU patients.

The state reported that 163 patients were on ventilators, a 16-percent increase over the prior day, and another record high.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
