Mississippi coronavirus battle breaks more records as virus continues to spread

Mississippi broke more COVID-19 coronavirus records Saturday as cases and deaths continued to climb with the latest statistics released by the state.

Mississippi reported 1,434 new cases Saturday. That brings the total number of cases found in Mississippi to 51,097. The state believes more than 30,000 of those cases have recovered.

The state also reported 17 new deaths Saturday attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,480.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases jumped to 1,322 cases per day after Saturday’s daily count. That figure set another record for the average new cases in a 7-day period.

The new trailing 7-day average is more than four times what it was a month ago when the average was 330 on June 20.

The 14-day average of daily new cases jumped to 1,120, also a new record high.

The 14-day death toll rose to 253 people in the last two weeks, another new high.

Mississippi hospital utilization dropped Saturday slightly off Friday’s high. On Saturday the state reported 961 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospital beds with another 211 suspected COVID patients hospitalized and awaiting test results.

The state said 295 people with COVID-19 were in ICU beds, which was a new all-time high.

The state reported that 159 patients were on ventilators, a slight decrease from the prior day.
