Mississippi reports lower coronavirus cases, state says it’s likely a weekend reporting lag

Mississippi reported far less new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Monday, but the state’s top health officer said it’s likely a weekend lag, not an actual reduction in virus spread yet.
The state reported 653 new coronavirus cases and six more deaths from the virus, bringing the total cases to 52,957 and 1,501 deaths. The state believes approximately 35,000 people have recovered from the virus.
“I wouldn’t be too comfortable with the 600 number,” Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said. “We frequently have a little bit of a drop after the weekend so we’ll just follow subsequent days to see what’s happening. but certainly would not take this as an indicator that we’ve seen much improvement yet. Although certainly, we can be hopeful.”
The state reported the number of patients with confirmed COVID-19 rose slightly Monday with 949 confirmed COVID cases and another 230 suspected patients.
Dobbs said nine major medical centers in Mississippi had no ICU beds available.
