A Mississippi prison has reported that more than half its inmates have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The George County Correctional Facility has reported that 229 inmates have tested positive for the virus. The prison houses a combination of local inmates and state prisoners.

Prison officials decided to test all the inmates after a couple of them became sick and were hospitalized.

George County Sheriff Keith Havard said the majority of the inmates with the virus show no symptoms or very mild ones.

Prison guards are segregating inmates with the virus from those who have not contracted it.

“I kind of figured this bad news was coming when they tested seven inmates and six came back positive. That’s never a good sign,” Havard told WLOX-TV.
