Mississippi’s coronavirus ‘curve’ is anything but flattening; record number of cases reported Thursday

Mississippi set a new single-day record Thursday for the number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases as the state statistics show the virus is still running rampant across Mississippi.

The number of hospitalized confirmed COVID-19 coronavirus patients remained at near-record levels Thursday, and the 14-day, daily new case average broke the previous record as well..

The state reported 1,775 new coronavirus cases and 48 more deaths from the virus.

The state said 23 of the deaths reported Thursday actually occurred between July 10 and July 27, but were delayed in reporting.

Mississippi State Department of Health officials reported that 972 confirmed COVID-19 patients were hospitalized with another 273 suspected COVID patients in hospitals across the state.

The state reported 296 patients were in ICU beds with 177 requiring a ventilator, also a new record.

In total, 57,579 cases have been found in the state. The state believes more than 35,000 of those cases have recovered.

A total of 1,611 people have died as a result of coronavirus.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases jumped to 1,361, just below the record set on Sunday.

The 14-day, daily average rose again to a new record, 1,270 cases per day a new record. The 14-day, daily average has set a new record each day for more than two weeks.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
