Florida couple accused of shooting at Mississippi police during car chase

Mississippi police say suspects in a stolen car fired at officers during a police chase that continued into Alabama Friday night.

Biloxi police said they responded to a report of a stolen car and attempted to stop the vehicle when the car sped away. As officers pursued the suspects, police said someone in the car began firing at them.

Officers continued their pursuit as the car crossed into Alabama on Interstate 10.

Eventually, the suspects stopped the car and fled on foot before the police eventually captured them. Police officers were not injured in the shooting.

Arrested were Willie George Byrd, 23, and Ashley Leann Hurd, 20, both of Pensacola, Florida.

Byrd was a wanted fugitive from the state of Florida, police reported.

Both were charged with possession of stolen property and aggravated assault on a police officer. Byrd was also charged with felony eluding police.
