Mississippi’s coronavirus fight: 18,000 new cases, nearly 350 deaths in last two weeks

After ending July with an average of more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases per day, Mississippi kept the trend going Saturday with more than 1,100 new cases and 30 deaths reported.

The state reported 1,134 new coronavirus cases Saturday and 30 more deaths from the prior day.

Six of the deaths reported Saturday actually occurred between July 5 and 26, but were delayed in reporting the state said.

The number of new cases was down from Thursday’s record high for the most new cases in a single day – 1,775.

Mississippi health officials reported 968 confirmed COVID-19 patients were hospitalized with another 204 suspected COVID patients in hospitals across the state. Both statistics were lower than the prior day.

The state reported 302 patients were in ICU beds, near an all-time record, with 172 requiring a ventilator.

In total, 59,881 cases have been found in the state. The state believes more than 35,000 of those cases have recovered.

A total of 1,693 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 1,255 with Saturday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average rose again to a new record, 1,288 cases per day a new record. The 14-day, daily average has set a new record each day for the last 20 days.

In the last two weeks, more than 18,000 new cases have been reported and 349 deaths have been reported.

Totals of all reported COVID-19 cases for 2020, including those in long-term care (LTC) facilities.
